Art and culture

Reggae singer & songwriter Samuel Berhanu’s debut album is entitled “Keras Gar Negeger” (Speaking with oneself). Samuel Berhanu, who goes by the stage name Sami-Dan, is a graduate of the Addis Abeba University (AAU) in Construction Technology & Management in 2001. He is an Engineer by profession but music has been his passion for as long as he can remember. In September 2016, Addis Standard’s Mahlet Fasil interviewed Sami Dan on his debut album. Excerpts:

Addis Abeba, March 3/2017: Too often, people tend to focus on what divides them rather than what we have in common. In that regard, art and culture can play an important role in bringing people together and reminding us of the many things we share. As part of ongoing efforts to promote cultural understanding and acceptance, the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce that KEIGWIN+COMPANY, an electrifying contemporary dance group from New York, will share its theatrical and exciting interpretation of dance with Ethiopians from March 6-16, 2017.

The five-star Sheraton Addis Hotel, known for hosting high-level events, usually reserves its biggest ballroom, named after Ethiopia’s rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, for big gatherings. The ballroom has a capacity of accommodating more than 1,000 people on occasions such as cocktail receptions. The organizers of Girma Yifrashewa’s piano concert, held on 16 June 2016, have therefore picked no other venue than this spacious ballroom.
