Calls on the government to “Restore Rights, Address Grievances”

Nairobi, January 12, 2017 – Ethiopia plunged into a human rights crisis in 2016, increasing restrictions on basic rights during a state of emergency and continuing a bloody crackdown against largely peaceful protesters, Human Rights Watch said today in its World Report 2017. The state of emergency permits arbitrary detention, restricts access to social media, and bans communications with foreign groups.

Addis Abeba, Jan. 05/2017 – The Federal high court 4th Criminal Bench has today begun hearing testimonials from defense witnesses subpoenaed by lawyers representing Yonatan Tesfaye, former spokesman of the opposition Semayawi (Blue) party and rights activists.

Addis Abeba Jan. 03/2017– The federal High Court 19th criminal bench has today sentenced19 defendants under the file name of the first defendant Kedir Moahmmed Yusuf to five years a six months each while one defendant in the same file was sentenced to four years and five months. On Dec. 21 2016 the federal court found all the 20 defendants guilty of terrorism related charges and violating the country’s penal code.
