Says legal, policy reforms crucial prior to May elections

A 76 pages report released yesterday by the Human Rights Watch (HRW), accused the Ethiopian government’s systematic repression of independent media and said it “has created a bleak landscape for free expression ahead of the May 2015 general election.” “In the past year, six privately owned publications closed after government harassment; at least 22 journalists, bloggers, and publishers were criminally charged, and more than 30 journalists fled the country in fear of being arrested under repressive laws,” a statement from HRW said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Ethiopian capital Addis Abeba yesterday as the first leg of a three-day African tour. “President Erdogan is most welcome in Ethiopia at this time when the partnership between the two countries has reached a record high,” Ewnetu Belata, State Minister of Ethiopia’s Government Communications Affairs Office told The Anadolu Agency on Tuesday.
