It takes little to understand that an educated society is one that transforms itself into higher levels of innovation and productivity. The World Bank in its 2007 quality of education and economic growth report says, “Education can increase the innovative capacity of the economy – knowledge of new technologies, products, and processes.”

Other studies show in many countries individuals’ earning is dependent on their level of education. That may be partially true, but certainly undeniable.

Sex, Race and Religion:  Does it matter?

This election may offer some hard choices for voters driven by prejudice.  Americans must decide between a man fathered by an African, who supports gay marriage, and a conservative Mormon, a religion that once advocated polygamy and only lifted its ban on African men in the priesthood in 1978.

Both Obama and Romney are objects of prejudice.  The incumbent’s race is represented by less than 13% of the American population.  The challenger’s religion is represented by less than 2%.  The fact remains that race and religion still play a role in American politics.  America has had one African-American president, one Catholic president, and no Jewish presidents.

After Russia joined the rest of the Security Council in condemning Syrian government forces for killing so many people in Houla, hope has arisen in the West that Moscow can now be enlisted to bring about a resolution to the ongoing crisis in Syria in a manner similar to what occurred in Yemen.  As the headline of a May 26 New York Times article put it, the “U.S. Hopes Assad Can Be Eased Out with Russia’s Aid.”  Such expectations, though, are utterly misplaced.  Moscow is neither willing nor able to persuade Syria’s President Assad to step down like Yemen’s President Saleh did at the beginning of 2012.
