More Than 4.6 Million children in Ethiopia facing hunger from current drought

Close to five million children risk going hungry as the result of a worsening food crisis in Ethiopia brought on by a severe drought across normally green and productive regions – making this natural disaster the worst in recent history, warns Save the Children.

Three hundred and fifty thousand children are already severely malnourished, which if left untreated, can cause stunting, physical and mental delays in their development, or death.

Land degradation worldwide costs an estimated US$10.6 trillion every year and presents a huge challenge to future global food security. In sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia, soil nutrient-depletion is directly related, where fertilizer use and agricultural productivity rates are the lowest in the world. Many African countries use little or no potash fertilizers, which are crucial for balanced fertilization and sustainable cropping systems.
