The fight against the deadly Ebola outbreak must be tackled on the basis of scientific evidence, prevention, understanding of transmissibility and an emergency call to fight it with means equivalent to what is spend on peace keeping. The statement was made by Mr. Carlos Lopes, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) at the Extra-Ordinary Emergency meeting of the African Union Executive Council holding this week in Addis Abeba.

The Commission of the African Union (AU) said it was“concerned by the report entitled “The Power These Men Have Over Us: Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) by African Union Forces in Somalia”, issued yesterday by Human Rights Watch (HRW) and said the “allegations will be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate measures will be taken if they are found to be true, through the relevant mechanisms that have been developed by the AU to prevent and respond to issues of misconduct and abuse in peace support operations, in accordance with the AU’s zero-tolerance policy on this matter.”

The European Commission has today announced €140m of funding for the countries currently affected by the Ebola virus in West Africa: Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria.

€38 million of the new package is specifically designed to help those governments bolster their health services (for example through reinforcing treatment centers or support for health workers), both during the crisis and in the recovery phase. It will also provide support in the areas of food security, water and sanitation, which are essential in terms of safeguarding the health of the population.
